The Tripura Kingdom is one of the oldest princely states in India, with a history dating back more than 2,000 years. The Ujjayanta Palace, located in Agartala, was built in 1901 by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya after the original palace was destroyed by an earthquake in 1897. The name "Ujjayanta" was given by Rabindranath Tagore, who had close ties with the Tripura royal family.
The palace is an architectural marvel with Mughal, European, and Indian influences. It features beautifully designed halls, a throne room, a library, and lush gardens. It served as the royal residence of the Manikya kings until Tripura merged with India.
Today, Ujjayanta Palace houses the Tripura State Museum, showcasing Tripura’s rich history, art, and culture. It remains a major tourist attraction and a symbol of Tripura’s glorious past.
