Ambassa, Tripura: Preparations for the Village Committee (VC) elections are in full swing as polling personnel began departing for their respective polling stations on Sunday morning, a day ahead of polling.

The elections are being held in Tripura after a gap of 10 years, generating considerable enthusiasm among voters and polling personnel. The election will be conducted through ballot papers, giving many first-time young voters in the TTAADC areas an opportunity to cast their votes using the traditional ballot system.

A total of 41 polling stations have been established under the Ambassa RD Block. From 8 AM onwards, polling personnel were seen heading towards their designated polling stations under strict security arrangements.

Speaking about the preparations, Ambassa RD Block BDO and Returning Officer Barnita Biswas stated that necessary measures were being taken to prevent any untoward incidents during the election. She also confirmed that polling personnel were reaching their respective polling stations within the scheduled time.

The Returning Officer appealed to all voters to maintain peace and exercise their democratic rights in a peaceful atmosphere.

The memorandum calls for urgent legislative and administrative reforms to protect Scheduled Tribe (ST) lands, welfare schemes, and social security privileges from potential indirect exploitation.

The submission explicitly states that the organization does not intend to criminalize, restrict, or penalize inter-community marriages, recognizing that an adult’s choice of partner remains a personal legal freedom. However, the YTA expressed deep concern over emerging instances where non-ST spouses allegedly gain indirect ownership, control, or economic enjoyment over protected tribal assets and state welfare schemes by utilizing an ST woman's official status.

Pointing to statutory protections under the Tripura Land Revenue and Land Reforms Act as well as Article 342 of the Indian Constitution, the association warned against "benami" arrangements and illegal land transfers designed to circumvent tribal protection laws. It emphasized that scholarships, subsidized credit, and tribal socio-economic development funds must strictly reach genuine beneficiaries and their immediate households rather than non-eligible third parties.

General Secretary Haba Debbarma, writing on behalf of the association, requested the state government to constitute an inter-departmental expert panel. The committee, comprising officials from the Tribal Welfare, Revenue, and Law departments, would study the legal feasibility of restricting or withholding ST-specific welfare advantages in cases where indirect commercial exploitation is verified through administrative checks.

Violent Protests Erupt in Manipur’s Kangpokpi Over Detention of Villagers

Violent protests erupted in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district after residents demonstrated against the alleged detention of six villagers from Kholen by security forces.

According to the statement provided to the police, the incident occurred on Saturday, September 19, when the minor was alone at her home as her parents had stepped out for work. The complainant alleged that the accused dragged the girl to a nearby deserted hillock (tilla) and sexually assaulted her.

The survivor did not immediately report the event on Saturday out of fear. However, after experiencing severe physical distress on Sunday, September 20, she disclosed the details to her mother. The family immediately approached the local authorities to seek legal intervention.

Police officials confirmed that the accused is currently being interrogated in custody. Investigators stated that further proceedings will depend on key forensic and legal steps, including:

Tripura Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma attended the final as the inaugural guest and chief guest. Other dignitaries present at the event included Dhalai Zilla Parishad Chairperson Susmita Das, Ambassa MLA Chittaranjan Debbarma, Ambassa BAC Chairman Parimal Debbarma, and Joint Director of the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Paimong Mog, along with other guests and officials. 

Minister Animesh Debbarma formally inaugurated the final by kicking the football. Speaking to journalists, he praised the Sonali Trophy initiative and stressed the importance of sports in guiding young people towards a positive and productive path.

The minister said that encouraging youth to participate in sports is essential for building a drug-free society. He emphasized that young people need to be encouraged to spend more time on the playing field and stated that the state government is taking various initiatives to promote sports and strengthen sporting activities across Tripura.

Speaking on behalf of the organizers, Sonali Trophy Secretary Sushanta Ghosh said that the tournament was organized with the objective of encouraging young people to take greater interest in sports and providing a platform for talented local footballers to showcase their abilities and move forward in their careers.

The final proved to be a tense and exciting encounter, with both teams fighting hard for the prestigious title. However, Team Doxit ultimately secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Auto Shramik Sangha to lift the Sonali Trophy 2026.

As part of the prize distribution, the champion team received a cash prize of ₹1.30 lakh along with a trophy, while the runners-up team received ₹70,000 in cash and a trophy.

A large number of sports enthusiasts and members of the public gathered at the Kulai Higher Secondary School ground to witness the grand finale. The successful conclusion of the tournament created a vibrant festive atmosphere in Kulai, marking another significant sporting event aimed at promoting football and encouraging young talent in the region.
