Nepal Flash Flood Disaster: Rescue Operations Continue as Hundreds Remain Missing

Kathmandu, August 31, 2026: Rescue teams in Nepal are continuing a massive search operation following devastating flash floods and landslides along the Nepal–Tibet border. The disaster has caused heavy loss of life and widespread damage to infrastructure in the affected region.

Officials have reported that hundreds of bodies have been recovered, while thousands of people are still unaccounted for. The exact figures are continuing to change as rescue teams reach remote locations and authorities verify missing-person reports.

A major focus of the rescue operation is the search for workers believed to be trapped inside mud- and debris-filled tunnels at several hydropower projects. Rescue teams are facing difficult conditions because many tunnels and access roads have been blocked by large amounts of mud, rocks and flood debris.

At the Upper Trishuli hydropower projects, specialist teams are working to clear blocked sections and reach areas where workers may still be trapped. Nepal Army personnel and technical teams are involved in the operation, with international assistance also being provided.

Several workers have already been rescued from affected hydropower facilities, offering hope to families who are still waiting for information about their relatives. However, rescuers say the operation remains extremely challenging because of unstable terrain and damaged infrastructure.

The disaster has also affected foreign nationals, with a significant number reported missing in the affected areas. Authorities are working to identify recovered victims and establish updated information about those still unaccounted for.

Nepal's government has called for continued international assistance, particularly for specialized tunnel rescue equipment, forensic identification and emergency response operations.

Meanwhile, families of missing workers continue to wait anxiously for news. Rescue teams remain engaged in search operations, with authorities stressing that every possible effort is being made to locate survivors and recover those who have lost their lives.

YTF Karbook Team Visits Alotola S.B. School Following Student and Guardian Complaints

Karbook, August 31, 2026: Following a report published by Tripura Janamat on August 29 regarding various complaints concerning the Alotola S.B. School under Karbook Sub-Division, a team of the YTF Karbook visited the school and interacted with students and teachers to understand the issues raised by students and guardians.

The YTF team was led by YTF Karbook President Tapan Debbarma. Members of the team, including Chengla Mog, Punimahan Tripura, Pradip Tripura, Rahul Tripura and Pati Bachan Tripura, were present during the visit.

The team reportedly spoke with students and guardians regarding the concerns raised about the school. The three teachers—Tapas Pal, Aktar Hussain and Ranjit Debbarma—were also present and responded to the issues discussed during the visit.

Karbook School Inspector (I.S.) Damudhar Tripura also visited the school and took part in discussions concerning the complaints raised by students and guardians.

According to the news sources, during the discussion, teachers Tapas Pal, Aktar Hussain and Ranjit Debbarma expressed regret and apologized over the issues raised. They reportedly assured those present that such incidents would not happen again in the future.

The visit comes after concerns regarding the school's educational environment and other issues were brought into the public domain. The involvement of the YTF team and education officials is expected to help address the concerns and improve coordination between the school, students, guardians and the local community.

Karbook Administration Seeks Cooperation for SIR 2026

Karbook: An all-party consultation meeting was conducted in Karbook Sub-Division as part of preparations for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026 of the electoral roll.

Political party representatives and Booth Level Agents attended the meeting, where officials explained the various stages of voter verification and electoral roll revision. The role of BLAs and their coordination with the administration was also discussed.

SDM Pradip Debbarma presided over the meeting in the presence of DCM Dibakar Jamatia and other concerned officials. The administration stressed the need for collective participation to complete the revision process in a fair, transparent, and error-free manner.

Alotola S.B. School Faces Education Concerns; Locals Seek Administrative Intervention

Karbook, Gomati, Tripura, August 29, 2026: Concerns over the functioning of Alotola S.B. School in Patichhari ADC Village under Karbook Sub-Division have prompted local residents and the School Management Committee (SMC) to seek the attention of the Education Department and local administration.

According to complaints raised by locals and students, regular classroom teaching at the school has allegedly been affected by a shortage of teachers and other official responsibilities. Some students have also alleged that mobile phones are being used by certain teachers during school hours, raising concerns over classroom discipline and the quality of teaching.

An allegation has also been raised against teacher Aktar Hossain, who students claim was using a mobile phone for personal business-related activities during school hours. However, the allegation has not been independently verified, and no official document or conclusive evidence supporting the claim has been made public so far.

Local residents have further raised concerns regarding alleged favoritism involving Tapas Pal and administrative issues allegedly associated with Ranjit Debbarma. There are also local complaints alleging inappropriate behavior and physical treatment of students. These allegations remain unverified and would require an impartial inquiry by the competent authorities before any conclusion can be reached.

Speaking about the situation, Head Teacher Jagadish Marak said that teachers are currently handling several government-related responsibilities. He pointed out that reports such as GP, EP, FP and PP are required to be submitted by August 31, adding to the workload of the existing staff.

The Head Teacher also acknowledged the shortage of teachers at the school and said that the limited staff are facing additional responsibilities. He expressed his commitment to providing quality education but stressed the need for greater government support and adequate teaching staff.

Meanwhile, the SMC committee and local residents have urged the Education Department and administration to assess the school's academic activities, ensure that regular classes continue after the mid-day meal, examine the complaints raised by students and residents, and take appropriate steps to resolve the teacher shortage.

YTA Demands Kokborok Announcements at Railway Stations Across Tripura

Agartala, August 28, 2026: The Young Tripuri Association (YTA) has submitted a memorandum to the concerned authorities at Agartala Railway Station, demanding the inclusion of Kokborok-language announcements at railway stations wherever public announcements are made.

Speaking at a press briefing, YTA Organising Secretary Supra Debbarma said the demand is aimed at ensuring greater linguistic inclusion and making railway services more accessible to Kokborok-speaking passengers.

According to the organisation, Kokborok holds an important place in the identity, heritage and cultural life of the indigenous people of Tripura. YTA argued that using Kokborok for railway announcements would help passengers understand important information more easily while also recognising the state's indigenous linguistic identity.

The organisation stressed that public services should be accessible to people from all sections of society and said the introduction of Kokborok announcements would represent an important step towards linguistic equality.

YTA has urged the railway authorities to consider the demand positively and take appropriate measures to introduce Kokborok announcements at railway stations where public announcements are made.

The organisation expressed hope that the authorities would respond to the memorandum in the broader interest of passengers and the preservation and promotion of the Kokborok language.

Thursday: The Indian women’s hockey team produced a historic performance at the Women’s World Cup, defeating Germany 3-1 in the fifth-sixth classification match to secure a fifth-place finish—the country’s best result at the tournament since finishing fourth at the inaugural 1974 edition.

The Indian side then narrowly missed a place in the semi-finals after losing their crucial encounter against Australia. Despite creating opportunities throughout the tournament, inconsistent finishing against England, the Netherlands and Australia prevented India from converting promising performances into victories.

Against Germany, however, India’s attacking play finally produced the desired results. After a goalless first half, Ishika opened the scoring in the 43rd minute following a precise pass from Neha. Navneet doubled the advantage just a minute later through a powerful penalty-corner variation.

Navneet completed her brace in the 47th minute after receiving a pass from captain Salima Tete, producing an excellent finish to put India 3-0 ahead.

Germany managed a consolation goal through Lynn Krings in the 59th minute, but India’s defence held firm to secure the historic victory.

Vijay’s PM Appeal Strongest in Northeast, India Today-CVoter Survey Reveals

New Delhi, August 28, 2026: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay has emerged as a notable name in the national prime ministerial race, with an unexpected regional trend placing him strongest in the Northeast, according to the August 2026 India Today-CVoter Mood of the Nation survey.

The survey shows that 18.5 per cent of respondents in the Northeast consider Vijay the most suitable choice to become India’s next Prime Minister. His support in the region is significantly higher than the 14.3 per cent recorded in the South, his home region.

At the national level, Vijay receives 9.2 per cent support, placing him third among the preferred prime ministerial choices. Prime Minister Narendra Modi leads the list with 48.7 per cent, followed by Rahul Gandhi with 27.1 per cent.

Vijay’s regional performance becomes particularly striking when compared with other parts of the country. His support stands at 9.6 per cent in the East, 8.5 per cent in the West and just 4.6 per cent in the North.

The figures are noteworthy because Vijay’s political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), does not have a significant organisational presence in the Northeast. His relatively strong support there therefore raises questions about the factors behind his growing national appeal.

Vijay entered electoral politics with the launch of TVK in 2024 and subsequently became Tamil Nadu Chief Minister after the party came to power in 2026. His supporters have increasingly projected him as a potential national leader ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha election.

The survey also places Vijay in a strong position among Opposition leadership choices. When respondents were asked who would be best suited to lead an Opposition alliance, 12.2 per cent chose Vijay, putting him behind Rahul Gandhi at 29 per cent but ahead of several established regional leaders.

The Mood of the Nation survey was conducted by CVoter, with 25,184 respondents directly surveyed between July 1 and August 25, alongside 91,795 interviews from regular tracking conducted over the previous six months.

While the findings do not necessarily indicate an established nationwide political base for Vijay, they offer an early indication that his appeal may extend beyond Tamil Nadu and the southern states.

Nine-Point Demands Raised in Khowai as GMP, TYF and TSU Stage Mass Protest

Khowai: A mass sit-in programme was organised in Khowai by the sub-divisional committees of GMP, TYF and TSU, with the organisations putting forward a series of demands related to the tribal community and the functioning of the autonomous council.

The protesters highlighted nine major demands, including the announcement of Village Committee elections, establishment of employment opportunities through the ADC, and constitutional recognition for Kokborok by including it in the Eighth Schedule.

The programme was attended by several prominent leaders, including former minister Naresh Jamatia, former TTAADC CEM Ranjit Debbarma and former MLA Padma Kumar Debbarma, besides other organisational leaders, workers and supporters.

During the mass sit-in, speakers explained the importance of the nine-point demands and urged the government and concerned authorities to address the issues without further delay.

The gathering also highlighted concerns surrounding employment, local administration and the preservation and recognition of the Kokborok language.

The organisers appealed to the authorities to take concrete measures to fulfil their demands and resolve the issues raised through the programme.

Chawmanu Road Blockade Over Footbridge and Drinking Water Demands

Dhalai, August 28, 2026: Residents of Debendra Karbari Para, under the Chawmanu Village Committee in Dhalai district, once again took to the road on Friday morning, blocking the Chawmanu–Manu route to press for solutions to their long-standing connectivity and drinking-water problems.

The road blockade reportedly began at around 6:00 AM, with villagers demanding the construction of a footbridge over the river and a permanent source of safe drinking water.

According to local residents, the river becomes difficult and dangerous to cross during the monsoon as water levels rise. Villagers claimed that the situation severely affects daily communication between the two sides of the river and creates particular problems for school-going children.

Residents alleged that when the river water becomes muddy during the rainy season, they are forced to depend on stream water despite concerns over its quality. They said the drinking-water problem has continued for a long time.

The villagers further claimed that written applications have been submitted to the concerned authorities on several occasions, but no permanent solution has been implemented so far.

The protesters have made it clear that they want concrete action on both demands. They warned that the road blockade will continue unless the authorities provide a satisfactory assurance and take steps toward resolving the problems.

The protest has once again brought attention to the difficulties faced by residents of remote areas of Dhalai, particularly during the monsoon season.

Bangladesh May Join Mecca Pact With Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye; India Watches Closely

Dhaka/New Delhi, August 28, 2026: Bangladesh is reportedly weighing a move to join the newly established Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, a potential development that could reshape regional strategic equations and draw close attention from India.

The issue reportedly came up during Bangladesh Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir’s meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud in Jeddah. The talks were held on the sidelines of the 23rd Extraordinary Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

According to reports citing diplomatic sources, Saudi Arabia has extended an invitation to Bangladesh to join the security arrangement. Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry has not publicly confirmed the reported invitation, with its official statement instead highlighting growing bilateral ties, investment, economic cooperation and high-level exchanges between Dhaka and Riyadh.

The pact was signed on August 7, 2026, by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye. It establishes a collective-defence framework under which an armed attack on one member would be treated as an attack against all members.

If Bangladesh ultimately joins, the move could become strategically significant for South Asia. India has maintained increasingly close ties with Saudi Arabia but remains wary of Pakistan’s regional activities and Türkiye’s support for Islamabad.

Bangladesh’s possible participation has also generated political debate at home. Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh has supported the idea, saying that any decision regarding membership would fall within Bangladesh’s sovereign authority.

The development comes as Bangladesh’s new government seeks to strengthen relationships with multiple regional and global partners. Foreign-policy analysts are now debating whether joining the pact would fit Dhaka’s stated principle of putting Bangladesh’s national interests first while maintaining balanced relations with both India and Pakistan.

During his visit to Jeddah, Kabir also held talks with Türkiye’s Deputy Foreign Minister Musa Kulaklikaya, with discussions covering regional developments as well as economic and defence cooperation.

No final public decision has yet been announced by Dhaka. However, if Bangladesh formally joins the Mecca pact, it could mark a significant shift in the country’s strategic positioning and become a major talking point in India-Bangladesh relations.

Chennai: Actress Kiara Advani recently shared an emotional behind-the-scenes story from the shooting of Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, revealing how actor Yash and filmmaker Geetu Mohandas supported her after learning about her pregnancy.

21-Year-Old Model Muskan Allegedly Murdered at Delhi Home, Gym Trainer Under Police Scanner

New Delhi, August 28, 2026: A shocking murder has been reported from Delhi’s Old Mahavir Nagar, where a 21-year-old student and model, identified as Muskan, was allegedly stabbed to death inside her home on Wednesday.

According to police, Muskan was alone at her second-floor residence when the accused allegedly entered the house and attacked her repeatedly with a knife. Her cries for help alerted nearby residents, who rushed to the spot and found her severely injured and lying in a pool of blood.

Neighbours immediately took her to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, she later died from her injuries.

Police have named Imran, a trainer at the gym Muskan reportedly attended, as the main suspect. Her friends said the two had met at the gym and had initially become friends. However, they alleged that Imran later started harassing Muskan. Her sisters had also reportedly raised concerns about his alleged behaviour.

Additional DCP Abhishek Gupta said police teams are conducting a search for the accused and examining CCTV footage from the area. Investigators reportedly obtained CCTV images showing the suspect and are working to establish his whereabouts.

The police investigation is continuing, with teams working to trace and arrest the accused and determine the motive behind the alleged killing.

Bubagra Meets Tripura Governor, Raises Key TTAADC Issues

Agartala, August 26, 2026: Bubagra and Hon’ble Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), Shri Runiel Debbarma, met with the Hon’ble Governor of Tripura, Shri Indra Sena Reddy Nallu Ji, at Lok Bhavan in Agartala today.

During the meeting, Shri Runiel Debbarma discussed several important issues concerning the functioning and development of the TTAADC and matters related to the welfare and interests of the tribal people of Tripura.

A key point raised during the meeting was the pending bills passed by the TTAADC. The CEM requested the Governor to kindly consider and provide his assent to the pending bills at the earliest, so that the Council can move forward with the implementation of various measures and initiatives.

The meeting highlighted the importance of continued coordination between the TTAADC and the Governor’s office in addressing key issues concerning the autonomous district and its people.

MDC Presmit Debbarma Responds to Drinking Water Hardship in Sukiaya Village

Sukiaya, August 23: A gesture of concern and commitment towards the Tiprasa community was witnessed in Sukiaya village, where MDC Presmit Debbarma stepped forward to address the drinking water difficulties faced by local villagers.

Three days ago, while returning from work, MDC Presmit Debbarma reportedly noticed villagers carrying drinking water in pitchers. Seeing the hardship faced by the villagers, he stopped his vehicle and spoke with them about their difficulties.

Moved by the situation, he promised the villagers that he would try to arrange a source of fresh drinking water for them. Keeping his word, he returned to the village today, just three days later, and provided a motor water pump to help the villagers access fresh water.

The villagers expressed their gratitude for his timely intervention and support.

Speaking to the villagers, MDC Presmit Debbarma reiterated his commitment to working for the welfare of the Tiprasa people. He said that he would continue to do whatever possible within his capacity to support the community and address their basic needs in the future.

The incident has been viewed by local residents as an example of responsive leadership, where a public representative personally noticed a grassroots problem and took steps to provide immediate assistance.

Three Bangladeshi Nationals Detained While Attempting Illegal Entry in Singichhara, Suspected Trafficking Agent Arrested

Khowai, August 23: Three Bangladeshi nationals were detained by Khowai Police while allegedly attempting to enter India illegally through the Singichhara area of Khowai district. In connection with the incident, police also arrested a suspected agent allegedly linked to a human trafficking network.

According to police sources, the detained Bangladeshi nationals have been identified as Ripon Talukdar (40), a resident of the Firozpur area of Sunamganj district, Sujata Talukdar (32), and a minor. They were allegedly attempting to cross the international border illegally and enter India.

Police also arrested Priya Lal Sarkar (32) on suspicion of being involved in the alleged trafficking network. He is reportedly the son of Shashi Mohan Sarkar of the Ramnagar Shilpara Landless Colony area.

During the operation, police also seized a vehicle bearing registration number TR01BC0751. Preliminary investigation suggests that the vehicle may have been used to transport the alleged illegal entrants.

Following the incident, police have started questioning the detained individuals and the arrested suspect. Investigators are also examining whether other persons are involved and whether the incident is connected to a larger cross-border trafficking network.

Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.

Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya’s 118th Birth Anniversary Observed in Santirbazar

Ambassa: A social welfare programme was organised today on the initiative of noted teacher Swapan Namo in the tribal hamlet of Shikaribari, located at the foothills of the Longtarai Hills.

Speaking on the occasion, Swapan Namo said that such initiatives are aimed not only at helping underprivileged people but also at developing social awareness and a sense of responsibility among students.
