YTA Remembering Shib Sadhan Jamatia: The Silent Force Behind a Tipraland & Greater Tipraland Movement

Today marks the 3rd death anniversary of Shib Sadhan Jamatia, former President of the YTA Teliamura unit. A solemn program was held at his gravesite, where community members gathered to pay tribute to his memory and legacy.

Many may not be aware of the Young Tripuri Association (YTA), a grassroots organization inspired by Mizoram's influential Young Mizo Association (YMA). While the YMA is a powerful and well-known body in Mizoram, the YTA has worked more quietly—but no less significantly—within Tripura.

YTA has played a crucial role in shaping recent political movements, especially the calls for Tipraland and Greater Tipraland. Although operating behind the scenes, YTA’s support was instrumental in reviving the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), which had lost its political relevance after the year 2000. With YTA’s backing, IPFT regained momentum by championing the Tipraland demand. However, once the party grew stronger, it distanced itself from YTA and aligned with the BJP—much to the disappointment of its early supporters.

A similar pattern is now being seen with Tipra Motha, which has taken up the mantle of Greater Tipraland. Many intellectuals recognize this shift, but choose to remain silent, having transitioned from being nobodies to holding significant positions of influence.

In Mizoram, the YMA is devoted to the Mizo nation, working tirelessly for the welfare of the people. In Tripura, however, many fear that the dedication of the Tripuri people may be increasingly diverted toward politics. What this means for the future of the community remains uncertain—only time will tell.
