Opposition groups and other organisations have questioned aspects of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and called for greater transparency from the Election Commission. The Congress has held protests in several parts of the country demanding Kumar’s resignation, while the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has also issued a demand for his resignation and announced further protests.
The controversy intensified following reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised questions or expressed concerns during internal deliberations on electoral-roll matters. The reports have prompted calls for greater public clarification from the poll panel.
The Election Commission, however, has said that differences of views and observations are a normal part of institutional deliberations and has maintained that its decisions were taken according to established procedures.
As of September 26, there is no confirmed announcement that Gyanesh Kumar has resigned. Reports circulating about a possible resignation remain unconfirmed, with one report citing sources who said his resignation was unlikely at this stage.
The developments have placed renewed attention on the functioning of the Election Commission, electoral-roll revisions and questions of public confidence in the electoral process.
