Violent protests erupted in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district after residents demonstrated against the alleged detention of six villagers from Kholen by security forces.
The protests began around 10 p.m. on Saturday in Motbung and nearby areas, with demonstrators reportedly burning tyres and pelting stones at government vehicles. Security forces responded by firing several rounds of tear-gas shells to disperse the crowd.

During the agitation, protesters allegedly used heavy construction machinery to dig up sections of National Highway-2, the Imphal–Dimapur route, in an attempt to restrict the movement of security-force vehicles. Several protesters reportedly sustained injuries and were taken to a local hospital.
The protesters said the detained men were village volunteers from Kholen, which is located near Chawangkining, a Naga-dominated village that had recently witnessed an attack and the burning of houses.
According to officials, the detained villagers were subsequently released, after which the protests ended. Authorities said the situation in the area was brought under control.
The incident has once again highlighted the continuing security challenges and community tensions in parts of Manipur, particularly in areas where recent attacks and security operations have heightened local concerns.
