Dhaka/New Delhi, August 28, 2026: Bangladesh is reportedly weighing a move to join the newly established Mecca Joint Defence Agreement, a potential development that could reshape regional strategic equations and draw close attention from India.
The issue reportedly came up during Bangladesh Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir’s meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud in Jeddah. The talks were held on the sidelines of the 23rd Extraordinary Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

According to reports citing diplomatic sources, Saudi Arabia has extended an invitation to Bangladesh to join the security arrangement. Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry has not publicly confirmed the reported invitation, with its official statement instead highlighting growing bilateral ties, investment, economic cooperation and high-level exchanges between Dhaka and Riyadh.
The pact was signed on August 7, 2026, by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye. It establishes a collective-defence framework under which an armed attack on one member would be treated as an attack against all members.
If Bangladesh ultimately joins, the move could become strategically significant for South Asia. India has maintained increasingly close ties with Saudi Arabia but remains wary of Pakistan’s regional activities and Türkiye’s support for Islamabad.
Bangladesh’s possible participation has also generated political debate at home. Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh has supported the idea, saying that any decision regarding membership would fall within Bangladesh’s sovereign authority.
The development comes as Bangladesh’s new government seeks to strengthen relationships with multiple regional and global partners. Foreign-policy analysts are now debating whether joining the pact would fit Dhaka’s stated principle of putting Bangladesh’s national interests first while maintaining balanced relations with both India and Pakistan.
During his visit to Jeddah, Kabir also held talks with Türkiye’s Deputy Foreign Minister Musa Kulaklikaya, with discussions covering regional developments as well as economic and defence cooperation.
No final public decision has yet been announced by Dhaka. However, if Bangladesh formally joins the Mecca pact, it could mark a significant shift in the country’s strategic positioning and become a major talking point in India-Bangladesh relations.
