Nepal Flash Flood Disaster: Rescue Operations Continue as Hundreds Remain Missing

Kathmandu, August 31, 2026: Rescue teams in Nepal are continuing a massive search operation following devastating flash floods and landslides along the Nepal–Tibet border. The disaster has caused heavy loss of life and widespread damage to infrastructure in the affected region.

Officials have reported that hundreds of bodies have been recovered, while thousands of people are still unaccounted for. The exact figures are continuing to change as rescue teams reach remote locations and authorities verify missing-person reports.

A major focus of the rescue operation is the search for workers believed to be trapped inside mud- and debris-filled tunnels at several hydropower projects. Rescue teams are facing difficult conditions because many tunnels and access roads have been blocked by large amounts of mud, rocks and flood debris.

The disaster has also affected foreign nationals, with a significant number reported missing in the affected areas. Authorities are working to identify recovered victims and establish updated information about those still unaccounted for.

Nepal's government has called for continued international assistance, particularly for specialized tunnel rescue equipment, forensic identification and emergency response operations.
