Two Convicted in 79-Kg Ganja Smuggling Case, Sentenced to 10 Years in Jail

Khowai, Tripura: A Khowai district court has sentenced two accused to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment after convicting them in a ganja smuggling case involving the recovery of 79 kg of cannabis.

The case dates back to July 9, 2021, when police conducted a search at the Hawaibari naka point under Teliamura Police Station. During the vehicle search, a total of 79 kg of ganja was recovered.

The vehicle driver, Partha Debnath, and co-driver Bijesh Debbarma were arrested in connection with the case.

The matter was subsequently heard before Special Judge Sharmistha Mukherjee at the Khowai District Court. During the lengthy trial, the court examined a total of 12 witnesses and reviewed the evidence and documents presented in the case.

After considering the testimonies and other evidence, the court found both accused guilty.

The court then sentenced Partha Debnath and Bijesh Debbarma to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on each of them.

The verdict is being viewed by the concerned authorities as a strong message against drug trafficking and the illegal transportation of cannabis.
