According to preliminary information, the two teenagers were travelling on a red scooter from Teliamura towards Chakmaghat on Tuesday night. Eyewitnesses said the scooter was moving at high speed when the rider reportedly lost control near Loknath Ashram. The vehicle allegedly crashed into a vehicle parked along the roadside or a large banyan tree. The exact point of impact remains to be confirmed.

Doctors declared Jit Sarkar dead upon arrival, while Deep Chowdhury was referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala because of his critical condition.

The accident has cast a pall of grief over Chakmaghat during the Durga Puja festivities. It has also raised concerns about road safety, speeding and the presence of underage riders on highways.

More Than 10 Mosques Reportedly Demolished During Assam Eviction Operation

NAGAON, Assam, October 20, 2026: Reports about the demolition of mosques during Assam's recent eviction drive have added another dimension to the controversy surrounding the operation in Nagaon, Hojai and Golaghat districts.

According to reports published by Scroll.in and The Telegraph, residents alleged that more than 10 mosques were demolished during the operation in the Lutumari Longjap Reserve Forest area. Some of the places of worship were reportedly several decades old.

Demolition of Mosques
Demolition of Mosques

The demolitions took place as authorities removed homes and other structures from land classified as reserved forest. The wider operation reportedly affected more than 1,100 families over October 17 and 18.

On October 17, 547 families were reportedly evicted across the three districts, including 336 in Nagaon, 152 in Hojai and 59 in Golaghat. The following day, authorities carried out a large-scale operation in Lutumari, where The Times of India reported that 563 families were evicted and 1,669 structures demolished.

Residents have also challenged the administration's claims of encroachment, saying some families had lived in the area for decades and had historical links to forest management activities.

The authorities' stated position is that the drive was conducted to recover reserved forest land after the required legal proceedings.

The precise number of mosques demolished, their individual locations and the circumstances surrounding each structure require further verification. The reports of mosque demolitions should therefore be distinguished from a fully verified official inventory.

The incident has raised questions about the impact of eviction operations on homes, community institutions and places of worship, alongside the government's stated objective of protecting forest land.

With the families in Tripura facing the difficult task of arranging transportation from Karnataka, the Tripura People Foundation has stepped forward to seek public assistance.

The foundation is seeking cooperation from the public to help ensure that all three deceased individuals can be returned to their families for their final rites.

Youth Congress Burns Effigy of CEC Gyanesh Kumar in ‘Vote Chori Ki Raasleela’ Protest

New Delhi: The Indian Youth Congress has brought the issue of electoral transparency back into the political spotlight through a protest titled “Vote Chori Ki Raasleela”, during which demonstrators burned an effigy of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Youth Congress
Youth Congress

The protest used a politically charged symbolic demonstration to convey the organisation's dissatisfaction over allegations of vote theft. By portraying the Chief Election Commissioner as Ravana, the protesters sought to draw attention to their concerns about the functioning and accountability of the electoral system.

Electoral integrity is a fundamental issue in a democratic society, as public confidence in the voting process is essential to the legitimacy of elected representatives and institutions. Allegations concerning electoral irregularities can therefore generate significant political debate and demands for transparency.

The Youth Congress demonstration reflects the continued use of street protests by political organisations to communicate their demands and challenge institutions. However, the claims raised by protesters must be assessed separately from established facts, official findings and evidence-based investigations.

The latest demonstration underscores the importance of transparent electoral procedures, credible responses to complaints and public access to reliable information in maintaining confidence in democratic processes.

₹1.5 Crore Road Repair Tender Under Scrutiny Following Public Complaints

Kamalasagar, Tripura: Questions have been raised over a reported ₹1.5 crore road repair tender in the Dhanchhari–Nehal Chandanagar area under the Kamalasagar Assembly constituency after residents complained that the road continues to remain in a poor condition.

Kamalasagar

According to residents, the road has caused difficulties for commuters for several years despite claims that repair work was planned through a tender process. The absence of the expected improvement has led to allegations of possible financial irregularities.

Local residents have accused Kamalasagar MLA Antara Sarkar Deb and her associates of involvement in the alleged irregularities. No independent confirmation of the accusations or evidence establishing wrongdoing has been presented in the information available.

On Sunday, residents reportedly began repairing parts of the road themselves, hoping to improve travel conditions before the Durga Puja festivities.

The incident has brought renewed attention to the need for transparency in public infrastructure projects. Residents want the authorities to clarify whether the tender was awarded, how much money was released, whether any work was completed and who was responsible for implementing the project.

An official response or independent investigation would be necessary to establish the facts behind the allegations.

Questions Raised Over Betel Nut Trade at Tripura–Assam Border; Traders Seek Government Intervention

Tripura: Allegations surrounding the interstate transportation of betel nuts have raised questions about border monitoring, tax compliance and the rising cost of the product in Tripura's local markets.

According to local sources, trucks carrying betel nuts are reportedly travelling from Tripura to other states on a regular basis. The report alleges that these consignments are being moved without payment of applicable taxes and that illegal payments may be facilitating their passage through a checkpoint on the Tripura–Assam border.

Betel Nuts

These allegations have yet to be independently verified. The role of any police personnel or individual traders would need to be established through an official inquiry and supporting evidence.

The report also identifies an alleged business operation involving a person from Kamalpur, who is said to store betel nuts in Kallachhari before transporting them outside Tripura. The identity of the person and the legality of the transactions have not been independently confirmed.

Meanwhile, local betel nut traders say they are struggling with increased purchase prices. The rising cost of the product is reportedly affecting profit margins and creating difficulties for small businesses that rely on daily sales.

Consumers are also feeling the pressure, as the price of betel nuts has reportedly climbed sharply. Traders say the situation deserves attention because the product remains an important part of everyday local commerce.

Betel Nuts Tree

Some traders suspect that the large-scale movement of betel nuts outside the state may be reducing local availability and contributing to higher prices. However, determining the precise cause will require market data and an assessment of supply and demand.

Local traders and consumers are calling on the state government and relevant enforcement agencies to examine the allegations, verify tax compliance and investigate any suspected irregularities at the border.

They also want authorities to assess whether current monitoring arrangements are adequate to ensure lawful transportation of goods between Tripura and Assam.

The issue highlights the need for transparent trade practices, proper revenue collection and effective enforcement of applicable regulations. Any action taken by the authorities could help establish the facts and address the concerns raised by the local business community.
