Road Development Delayed for Decades: Residents of Seven Villages Appeal to CM Over Forest Dept Hurdles

Since 1998, residents of seven villages between 4.5 Mile and Pushparam Para under Ambassa Block have been demanding the development of a 9.8-kilometer road. However, during the Left Front government’s tenure, no action was taken to improve this crucial road. In 2017,
Pushparam Para

then BJP Dhalai District President Parimal Debbarma had promised the villagers that if the BJP came to power in the 2018 state elections, the road would be developed as a top priority.

Nearly seven years into the BJP-led government’s rule, the condition of the road remains unchanged and continues to deteriorate. Ironically, large signboards have now been installed at the entrance of the road, indicating its proposed development. Funds for the 9.8 km project have already been sanctioned to the Public Works Department (PWD), and the tendering process has been completed by the Dhalai District PWD.

However, no physical progress has been made even after one and a half months. The major obstacle now appears to be objections from the Ambassa Forest Department. Frustrated by the delay, local residents have submitted a written appeal to the Chief Minister, demanding immediate intervention to resolve forest clearance issues and begin road construction without further delay.

Negligence at Tuisaramsakami J.B. School: Late Opening, Poor Infrastructure, and Lack of Teachers Raise Concerns

Tuisaramsakami Junior Basic School, under Mandai IS, is facing severe mismanagement and infrastructural neglect. The school has only three teachers, including the in-charge, Chaitra Debbarma.
Tuisaramsakami Junior Basic School
Tuisaramsakami Junior Basic School

On July 31, the school was found to be opened late at 8:21 AM. Teacher Kabita Debbarma, who returned from a 10-day leave, was the only staff present. She stated that the other two teachers had not reported, and she was unaware if they would come. Had she not returned today, the school would have remained closed without any official notice.

Due to the delay in opening, many students returned home after finding the school shut. The building's condition is alarming — the ceiling is collapsing, the electric meter box is dangerously installed inside a metal grill, and the school ground is overgrown with weeds, now serving as a grazing area for local livestock. Such is the dismal state of many schools in the hilly regions.

According to reports, Subodh Debbarma not only behaved inappropriately with a female constable but also attempted to hurl stones at journalists who arrived at the scene to cover the incident. Eyewitnesses and railway passengers were stunned by the OC's behavior, leading to strong public condemnation. Locals gathered at the station demanded strict disciplinary action against the officer for his irresponsible and disgraceful conduct.

The situation has raised serious concerns regarding the safety and discipline of GRP personnel stationed at the railway station.

Baijalbari School Students Stage Fresh Road Block Over Unmet Demands

For the second time in a week, students of Baijalbari School staged a road blockade demanding the removal of the current headmistress and the return of a recently transferred teacher

The initial protest occurred on July 26, when students blocked the road to voice their dissatisfaction. They alleged that the headmistress's behavior was inappropriate and that the sudden transfer of a well-liked teacher had disrupted their learning environment. The blockade was lifted only after intervention by the Inspector of Schools (IS), who assured the students that their demands would be looked into.

However, on July 30, the students again took to the streets, claiming that no action had been taken despite the earlier promise. This time, the protest caused significant disruption to traffic and daily life in the Baijalbari area.

After several hours of the road being blocked, officials from the District Education Office (DEO) arrived at the spot and held discussions with the students. Once the DEO promised to address their grievances, the students withdrew the blockade.

The repeated protests highlight growing unrest among students regarding school administration and staff reshuffling. Parents and community members have urged the education department to take swift action to prevent further disruption and restore normalcy in the school.

Dispute Over Land in Ambassa: Businessman Dibakar Dutta vs. Festival Committee

A controversy has erupted in Ambassa over a piece of vacant land, with serious allegations being exchanged between the local festival committee and a local businessman, Dibakar Dutta. The matter revolves around land ownership, monetary dealings, and unauthorized land use.

Ambassa
Ambassa

Recently, the Ambassa Festival Committee began land filling activities on a vacant plot in preparation for upcoming seasonal festivities. However, this move has sparked a legal and ownership dispute.

Addressing a press conference, businessman Dibakar Dutta presented documents and claimed that the land legally belongs to him. According to Dutta, the land’s original owners, Ajay Sand and Alisha Poonam Sand, have given him power of attorney, thus transferring current ownership rights to him.

Dutta alleged that a few days ago, the festival committee approached him requesting that he relinquish the land for public use during the festival. However, he refused. He added that on a subsequent occasion, he was again invited by the committee but could not attend due to prior commitments. Despite this, he claimed, the committee proceeded to dump soil on the land without informing or seeking permission from him.

Terming the committee’s actions as “unauthorized,” Dibakar Dutta announced his intention to pursue legal action to protect his rights. “Even though I possess the legal ownership documents, the Ambassa Festival Committee is acting arbitrarily by trying to occupy the land,” he said.

The issue is expected to escalate as legal proceedings unfold, with both parties standing firm on their claims.

Deep Concerns Over Misidentification of Tripura Surname Community Spark Worry of Communal Tensions in Tripura

Members of the Tripura surname community across Tripura are raising strong concerns over misclassification and cultural misrepresentation. While Noatia population is just over 10,000, Tripura surname individuals are widespread across the Tripura state but are either merged or labeled under other tribes like Noatia. The community fears this could lead to division, loss of identity, and potential social conflict unless the government acts quickly.

Noatia and Tripura are totally different community
Community of Tripura

A deep game in population report of state Tripura cloud of unrest and deep emotional pain is growing among the Tripura surname tribal community, who are alleging systematic misclassification and marginalization in both official records and public portrayals across Northeast Tripura State. This decades-long issue, they fear, is now threatening the cultural unity and coexistence among tribal groups.

As per the 2011 Census, the Tripuri (Tipra) tribal Debbarma Surname group is the largest indigenous population in Tripura, with a total of 592,255 people. The Debbarma surname, commonly cited as the main clan, is recognized under this category. However, the Tripura surname, despite being one of the most widespread and historically rooted tribes in Tripura State, is absent from official tribal records as a distinct identity.

Meanwhile, the Noatia tribe, with an officially recorded population of just 10,629, is often incorrectly presented as the representative identity of other communities — particularly Tripura surname people.

This misrepresentation is particularly alarming given the wide geographic spread of Tripura surname families across both ADC villages and Gram Panchayats, including:

  • Sunamura, Nalchar, and Boxanagar (Sepahijala District)

  • Belonia, Rajnagar, and Hrishyamukh (South Tripura District)

  • Sabroom, Manu, and Satchand (South Tripura and Gomati)

  • Silachari, Karbook, and Ampinagar (Gomati District)

  • Gandacherra, Raishyabari, and Longtarai Valley (Dhalai District)

  • Twisa, Kanchanpur, and Damchera (North & Unakoti)

  • Chowmanu, 32 Mile, and Atharobla (Dhalai and TTAADC regions)

From remote ADC-administered villages to GP-level habitations, Tripura surname families are culturally vibrant and numerically strong how Tripura Surname cum under Noatia with 10,629 population, yet their entire identity is being blurred in museums, exhibitions, and ST listings.

“We see our women’s rignai (Anok) and our clan names like Naitong, Aslong, and Khakolo displayed under Noatia identity. This is not a mistake—it’s a denial,” said a community elder from Gandacherra.

“Noatia has only around 10,000 population—nearly equal to a single large ADC village. But Tripura surname people are in hundreds of villages, from north to south Tripura. Then why are we absent from the census and listed under another tribe?” said a Gram Panchayat head from Karbook.

The fear among many is that this intentional or careless misclassification is part of a larger political or bureaucratic ploy — to suppress the true population of the Tripura surname people or create tension between indigenous communities, especially Debbarma, Tripura, and Noatia.

Community Demands:

  1. Official recognition of Tripura surname population as a distinct tribal subgroup.

  2. Correction of mislabeling in museums, school books, and government displays.

  3. Separate population count in future census under the name "Tripura" community.

  4. Urgent dialogue with government and tribal councils to prevent potential conflict.

With tribal identity tied closely to land rights, political reservation, education benefits, and cultural dignity, this is no small error—it is a wound to the soul of the community.

“This is a cultural theft and demographic manipulation. If the government doesn’t act now, a storm is coming. We don’t want a conflict—but we want truth,” said a youth activist from Twisa.

As Tripura walks a tightrope of tribal harmony, the government is being called to urgently verify facts, listen to grassroots voices, and ensure justice before unity fractures into division

MLA Ranjit Debbarma Urges Union Home Minister to Implement Inner-Line Permit System in Tripura

MLA Ranjit Debbarma submitted a memorandum to the Union Home Minister requesting the implementation of the Inner-Line Permit (ILP) in Tripura, citing the 1993 Memorandum of Settlement with ATTF. He warned that rising illegal migration poses a threat to both Tripura and national security, urging urgent action from the Centre.

ATTF
ATTF

In a strong and urgent appeal to safeguard national security and protect indigenous rights, Ranjit Debbarma, Member of the Legislative Assembly from Tripura, has officially submitted a memorandum to the Hon'ble Union Home Minister of India, demanding the implementation of the Inner-Line Permit (ILP) system in the state of Tripura.

The representation, dated 23rd July 2025, references a significant yet long-overdue provision in the historic "Memorandum of Settlement" signed on 23rd August 1993 between the Government of Tripura and the All Tripura Tribal Force (ATTF). Citing clause 2(e) of the agreement, Debbarma emphasized that the state government had committed to pursuing the introduction of the ILP system through the Centre.

“It was clearly mentioned that the State Government will insist on the Government of India to approve the demand for ILP. But sadly, even after 32 years, there has been no concrete action,” said Ranjit Debbarma in his appeal.

The legislator drew comparisons with Manipur, which successfully introduced the ILP in 2019, following the example of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Mizoram. Tripura, despite sharing an 856-kilometre international border with Bangladesh, remains without this critical regulatory mechanism, he noted.

He further warned that illegal migration continues unchecked, posing serious threats to both the internal security of Tripura and national integrity, and reiterated that the absence of ILP is a direct factor contributing to the demographic and security concerns in the state.

"Illegal infiltration in Tripura is increasing day by day due to the non-existence of the ILP system. It is now a national security concern," the memorandum stated.

The MLA has also marked copies of his appeal to:

  • The Hon'ble Governor of Tripura

  • The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tripura

This development has sparked renewed discussion on the long-pending demand for Inner-Line Permit in Tripura, particularly among tribal communities and regional political outfits who have consistently voiced concerns over cultural and demographic imbalance.

As of now, there has been no formal response from the Ministry of Home Affairs or the state government. However, the issue is expected to gain further political traction in the coming days.
