Agartala, September 5, 2026: In a major political development ahead of the Tripura Village Committee elections, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has indicated that the BJP, Tipra Motha and IPFT will contest the upcoming Village Committee elections together.
Speaking after returning to Tripura from New Delhi, where he met Union Home Minister Amit Shah along with Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, Saha said the three parties would work together in the September 28 Village Committee elections.

The development comes shortly after the high-level meeting in New Delhi, which focused on the upcoming elections as well as several longstanding issues concerning Tripura's indigenous population. The meeting between Shah, Saha and Pradyot was also attended by BJP Northeast Coordinator Sambit Patra.
One of the most important issues discussed was the implementation of the Tripartite Accord, particularly matters related to the land rights of indigenous tribal people.
According to Saha, work on the land-rights issue is expected to move forward soon after the Village Committee elections. The implementation of the agreement has been a major demand of Tipra Motha and has remained central to negotiations over an electoral understanding with the BJP.
The announcement marks a significant shift in the political equation in Tripura's tribal areas. Tipra Motha had earlier maintained that it would not enter into an electoral understanding without concrete progress on the Tripartite Accord.
The Village Committee elections are scheduled for September 28, covering 587 Village Committees, with counting scheduled for October 5. The elections are being held after a gap of nearly 10 years.
The BJP had reportedly delayed finalising its candidates while alliance discussions with Tipra Motha were underway, making the outcome of the Delhi meeting particularly significant.
The BJP-Tipra Motha-IPFT understanding, if implemented as announced, could significantly reshape the electoral contest across Tripura's tribal areas and will be closely watched ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
